Taking Care Of Things That Irritate Me

There are two things that have really been irritating  me lately.  The first is an issue with my Mac computer.  About once or twice a day the Mac mail freezes up and I have to do a hard start to get it to work again.  My IT company has looked at briefly but did not get it fixed.  So I take it to the Apple store today and got surprisingly quick service as I did not have an appointment.  I could have gotten an appointment but it would have been 8:00 PM tonight.  No thank you, I do not do West Town Mall at night by myself.  They could not get it to replicate what I was telling them but they did do something that that thought would fix the problem.  Don’t ask me what because most of this is Greek to me.  I am back at work and keeping my fingers crossed that the fix is in and I won’t have anymore problems.  I did look at new computers while I was there since mine is a 2011. They did comment that my computer was in good shape and is quick to open for its age. Since I am of a certain age, older computers do not bother me unless they don’t work.  It seems the new models do not have a lot of things that my current computer has such as USB ports, ethernet ports, etc.  So if I got a new computer I would have to buy, wait for it, adapters to make all of that work. That would total around $120.00.  Why don’t they just put them in the computer and charge me for them? While I am on the subject of Mac computers, I have a pet peeve.  I use folder for my customers and I sort the emails so that I can go back and reference what I have done on their print/mail projects.  Mac computers does not alphabetize those folders, they must be done manually.  Apple has come up with so many innovative things and they can’t alphabetize my folders. What??

The second that has been irritating me is two big scratches on my prescription sun glasses, right in the center.  Now this is the first prescription sun glasses that I have ever had and I thought I was really taking care of them.  Apparently not.  So I go to see about the scratch and I thought maybe they could just polish the scratch off.  Wrong.  A new lens is require.

I was determined to get these two issues fixed today, so I am hoping that the Apple store got my email issue fixed and I definitely have the sun glass issue fixed.  I was pleasantly surprised that Apple did not charge me for working on my computer, no so with the sun glasses, ouch.

Millennials and Direct Mail

Millennials are now the largest population and they love getting mail. The United States Postal Service did a study a couple of years ago and found that the majority of Millennials (64%) look through their mail and would rather scan the mail for information than in an email.  We all know that we go through our emails trying to clean out our inboxes and we do a lot of delete, delete, delete.  However, direct mail doesn’t go away that easily and if they see something of interest then they may lay it aside until they have more time to look over the information.

Do I think that you should do away with social media, emails etc?  No, in fact I think that the marketing should be in all channels of communications.  I use direct mail, a blog and social media for my company.  Using direct mail to direct a consumer to your website, or online shop makes the most sense.

The Joys Of Being A Business Owner

It is a lot of people’s dream to own their own business.  They think that they would not have any bosses to answer to and that would be great…wrong.  Every customer is your boss and you had better be paying attention to what the boss is saying.  Owning a business is not just having a product, selling the product and then go home at night.  Oh, if it were that easy.  My days are spent dealing with IT companies, vendors, employee issues, government regulations and certifications.

How I deal with all of this is that I have great employees and I don’t have to do it alone.  My philosophy is to hire people smarter than me and get out of their way.  We develop team work and we have a production meeting every day so that everyone is on the same page.  The real joy of owning my own business is when I get a message like the one below from a satisfied customer.  That is what it is all about.

Phyllis,

I know I’ve emailed before, but I want you to know what an incredible experience I’ve had with Burns and continue to have.   Because of the outstanding customer service, product and quality, we will be transitioning all of our needs to Burns as they arise – ( newsletters, publications, business cards, brochures, etc.)  Your team has made me feel educated and knowledgeable about everything from sizing, cost and turn around times that I will consider Burns to be my go to company from now on.

Thank you, Burns!
