Political Mailings Have Already Started

At Burns Mailing & Printing, we love the time leading up to elections.  The reason is a lot of printing and mailing.  We have been working with politicians for many years. One of the reasons that we do a lot of political work is that we offer a one stop shop for graphic design, printing and mailing.  We offer turn key estimates – including estimated postage, list clean up, duplicate address checks and automated bar-code postage rates.

We also offer other things need for a successful campaign such as push cards, brochures, door hangers, lapel stickers, laser personalized letters, invitations to events, posters and yard signs.

What is a State of TN Women Business Enterprise Certification (WBE)?

When a business is at least 51% women owned and meets other guidelines specified by the Governor’s Office of Diversity, that business can apply for a WBE status. That business once certified will be listed on the Governor’s diversity list and companies that are looking for businesses that have WBE status can contact them and possible do business with them.  The WBE business has to compete in the market place just like any other business.

Burns has been certified for many years and we are a 100% women owned business. We are located at 6131 Industrial Heights Dr., Knoxville, TN 37909.  We offer graphic design, printing (both digital and offset) and we are a complete direct mail company.  In other words, we are a one-stop convenience for direct mail.

For your next project, call me, Phyllis Burns, at 865 584-2265. We have it all under one roof and it is a big roof.

Everybody Likes To See Their Name In Print

Everyone likes to see their name in print, with the exception of bills.  When you receive a letter from a non-profit, it is nice to know that the letter is  personalized with your name. Burns can insert/match the letter into a closed (non-window) envelope, making the mailing have a more personal look.  Dear friend is not quite as effective as Dear Phyllis for example.  I think most folks are familiar with laser personalization on letters but variable date is not limited to letters. A post card can be personalized with  variable data on the card including the recipients name, a message such as happy birthday or other tag lines.  You have to admit that it catches you eye when your name is on the post card or flyer.

At Burns we can print a four color post card on both sides with variable data, such as “Phyllis we have a good deal” and address for mailing all on one pass of the press.  With our print shop mail software and our digital press we can sometimes, if the press is not booked, print and mail in one day.

Call me, Phyllis Burns,  for your next direct mail project and see what all is possible using variable data. 865 584-2265.

Richard Bean, And How I Got To Know Him

Back in 1999, we bought a $250,000 press and the Knoxville News Sentinel did a story on me and my late husband Ken Burns.  The story was about how we started the business in the garage and the progress that we had made in building the business and about our working together so successfully.  At that time Ken and I went out to lunch, most days as that was our time to catch up on what was going on in the business and to just be together.  One day we were at one of our lunch spots and Richard Bean comes up and ask if we were the couple in the Knoxville News Sentinel’s article.  We told him that we were and he introduced himself.  We knew his name because Richard is in charge of the Richard L. Bean Juvenile Detention Center.  We were both amazed that he remembered the article and recognized us. It seems that Richard went to a lot of the spots that we ate lunch, so we would see him often.  One of his favorites is Wright’s Cafeteria. I still see him at Wright’s Cafeteria, when I occasionally go out to eat.

Richard sends me emails from time to time and most of them are funny, but the one he sent me recently was very inspiring.  It was about the World War II cartoonist Bill Mauldin.  Sgt. Bill Mauldin was a soldier who was in the trenches with the rest of the guys in World War II.  He drew what he saw and most of it was not very pretty. He never held back even when General George S. Patton informed Mauldin he wanted the pointed cartoons celebrating the fighting men and making fun of the high-ranking officers to stop and stop NOW!  However, five-star General, Dwight D. Eisenhower, SCAFE, Supreme Commander of the allied forces in Europe had the last work. “Mauldin draws what Mauldin wants.” Mauldin won and Patton lost.  At 23, Mauldin won the Pulitzer Prize and was on the cover of Time magazine. He won a second Pulitzer Prize later and when President John F. Kennedy was assassinated, he drew a picture of the statue at the Lincoln Memorial, slumped in grief, its head cradled in its hands. According to all accounts he never lost that humble personality and considered himself just one of the enlisted men.

Thank you Richard for this inspiring article.

Boating, I Have Not Been A Fan Until Now

Joy Ride II

My son-in-law, John Day and daughter Joy Day have a cabin on the Tim’s Ford lake.  They love to go out on the boat but I have not been much of a fan of boating,  until now.  Recently, they purchased a 25 ft. pontoon boat and that has made boating a lot more fun for me.   It is more like being on a cruise, it is smooth and wakes from other boats do not rock the boat like being in a ski boat.   This is a picture of John and my granddaughter Kate Day and Lincoln, their sweet dog, on the inaugural champagne cruise. We had a great weekend with family and  some  friends who wanted to check out the new boat.  Looking forward to many more weekends on the Tim’s Ford lake.
