On my recent trip to Lisbon Portugal and to other day trips to surrounding cities I saw lots of interesting and magnificent things like this church and beautiful views of the city. However, there was one place that I had not counted on seeing in Lisbon and that was the inside of the ER at a Lisbon Hospital. Our first day of sight seeing begin with a visit to a castle. We rode an elevator to get to a street that was pretty high up and there was a deck with a beautiful view of the city. All of a sudden I felt like I was going to pass out and I did. When I woke up an ambulance had been called and they quickly loaded me up and took me to a hospital. This is where it gets different. Most of us have been to an ER at a hospital and they put you in a room or cubicle for treatment. Not so in Lisbon, they take you to a room that is very crowded, so crowded that the beds are touching each other. There are no visitors allowed unless the doctor calls them back and there is security to make sure that rule is followed. I understand the no visitors rule because they was not room for visitors to stand. When a nurse needed to attend to a patient she had to move the beds over in order to get to the bedside.
Although the ER was crowded, the care was excellent. Most of the nurses and the doctor spoke English. They never asked me if I had insurance or for any payment. They only took my personal information and my address. Turns out, when I got home and check with my insurance company, they will pay for all except the ambulance. They sent me home with a packet of information for my doctor here in Knoxville and it was all in Portuguese. However, thanks to Covenant Health, a translator was provided here in Knoxville so that my doctor had all the notes from Lisbon. It was nothing serious and the next day, I was out touring again. It makes me appreciate the good hospitals that we have here in Knoxville. I feel very blessed.
Oh by the way I have another trip planned and I purchased trip insurance, just in case.
Ken, my late husband liked quotes, and reading poetry. I have a picture of him reading poetry to me while I cooked breakfast shortly before he passed away. From time to time I find in books or in drawers little quotes that he has written down. The other day I found one that he liked. Running a graphic design, printing and direct mail company that requires tight deadlines, I sometimes find myself up to my ….. in alligators. Fortunately I have great employees who keep things running very smoothly most of the time. That is what makes a great company, team players who care about our customers.
Another thing that I found today was how many years I had been doing business with my biggest customer. Time goes by fast and although it did not seem like a long time, it has been 20 plus years. We must be doing something right.
I had a great Thanksgiving weekend in Brentwood TN with my family. We did everything from Volunteer at a homeless shelter, to decorating the house for Christmas. I hope that all of you had a great Thanksgiving and are ready for Christmas.
I am pleased that my company Burns Mailing & Printing was voted best fulfillment/direct mail in the American Advertising Federation’s Big Wig contest.

In 1993, we were purchasing the building where we current operate Burns Mailing & Printing. I had been out looking for a building and property and asked my neighbor Ron Kirkham if he knew of any commercial buildings where his business was located. He told me that a lady had some property across from him. It was owned by a lady whose husband had died and the business was shut down. I decided to drive by and the lady just happened to be at the building. We talked about the business that she and her late husband had run together. She showed me around the building and I asked her if Ken and I could come back later in the afternoon so that he could see it. We came back and he liked it as much as I did so we gave her a down payment and purchased the building. In 1994 we remodeled the building and added another 5400 square feet of production. She liked the idea of another husband and wife purchasing and running the business together.
It was in the fall and the leaves looked much like the picture that I took this morning. Things change just like the leaves in fall, but 25 years later Burns is still offering quality printing, graphic design and direct mail services.

Burns has been using software to clean up your list by utilizing CASS and NCOA link. It combines three powerful data quality tools in one easy step. It combines AR (address resolution service), PCOA (proprietary change of address and NCOAlink (national change of address).
Address Resolution – AR ensures that records deemed “broken” by CASS or DPV can be repaired and returned back to you list, so that is ready for prompt and efficient delivery and save you money by optimizing postage rates and getting your message into the hands of the right audience.
Proprietary Change of Address – PCOA – Did you know that 40% of all moves are never filed as a change of address with the USPS? PCOA processing alleviates this issue by using trusted third-party databases to find records that cannot be found using NCOAlink alone.
NCOAlink – National Change of Address. NCOA is a database that the USPS maintains that has the names and addresses of individuals, families, and businesses that have filed a permanent change of address with the USPS.
At Burns Mailing & Printing, we will use all three of these powerful tools to ensure that your data is complete, correct and current. If you have a list that you think is completely outdated, let Burns use this powerful new tool to clean up your lists.
Cleaning up your list is just the start, we can design, print and mail your project…all under one roof! It is a big roof!
